About TapeToCart
About
An independent set of material planning tools built around one question: how much do I actually need to buy?
What TapeToCart is
TapeToCart is a collection of material planning calculators for home improvement and DIY projects in the United States. You enter the measurements you actually took, choose how the material is sold, and get a quantity you can take to a store or supply yard.
The name describes the whole idea: from the tape measure to the cart. Measure, plan, buy.
Why we built it
Most material calculators answer a geometry question and stop there. They tell you that you need 2.2 cubic yards, but not how many bags that is, not that your supplier only sells in half-yard increments, and not how much extra to allow for handling loss.
The gap between “the math says X” and “order this much” is where projects go wrong: a second trip to the store, or a pile of leftover material you paid for. TapeToCart is built to close that gap.
How we approach the numbers
- Assumptions are visible. Planning allowances and package sizes are shown on screen and adjustable, never hidden inside the calculation.
- We do not invent values. Where a figure genuinely varies by product or supplier — bulk density is the clearest example — we ask you for it rather than publishing a number that would be wrong for most projects.
- Every rounding step is disclosed. You can open the calculation details on any result and see the full chain.
- Retailer-neutral. We start from your measurements, not from a particular store’s product catalog.
Our full calculation approach, conversion factors, and sources are documented on the Methodology page.
Who it is for
Homeowners, renters, and DIY builders planning a project themselves — typically someone who has measured the space and now needs to know what to put in the cart. The tools are built mobile-first, because the measuring usually happens in a yard or a room, not at a desk.
What TapeToCart is not
- Not a retailer, supplier, or contractor, and not affiliated with any brand or store.
- Not a substitute for professional engineering, structural, or code advice.
- Not a quoting system — final quantities, availability, and pricing come from your supplier.
See our Disclaimer for the full scope and limits.
How the site is funded
TapeToCart is an independent project. To cover hosting and development costs, the site may display advertising. Advertising does not influence our calculation methods, our default assumptions, or which calculators we build, and we do not recommend specific retailers in exchange for payment.
Feedback
If a calculator produced a result you did not expect, or a tool you need is missing, tell us. Real project feedback is what decides which calculator gets built next. Reach us through the contact page.
