Commitment
Accessibility
How we build these tools to be usable with a keyboard, a screen reader, or a small screen — and how to tell us when we fall short.
Our approach
A material calculator is only useful if you can actually operate it. We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA, and we treat accessibility as part of building a tool rather than a later addition.
What we do
- Real form controls. Options use native radio buttons, checkboxes, and select elements grouped in fieldsets with legends, so assistive technology announces them correctly.
- Labels on every input. Each field has a visible label and an accessible name.
- Full keyboard operation. Every control can be reached and operated with Tab and arrow keys; results can be produced without a mouse.
- Visible focus. Focused controls show a clear focus indicator.
- Announced results. Calculator results are placed in a live region so a screen reader announces the outcome instead of leaving it silent.
- Not color alone. Selected options are indicated by more than color, and error messages are text, not just a red border.
- Readable contrast. Text and interface colors are chosen for contrast against their backgrounds.
- Touch-friendly targets. Interactive elements are sized for finger input, and the entire option card is clickable rather than just a small dot.
- Responsive, single-column mobile layout. Content reflows without horizontal scrolling down to small phone widths.
- Text that scales. Layouts use relative units so browser zoom and larger text settings do not break the page.
Known limitations
We want to be honest rather than claim perfection:
- This site is hosted on a third-party platform, and some platform-generated markup is outside our direct control.
- Our testing is based on standards review and keyboard and screen-reader checks, not on a formal third-party audit.
- Complex numeric results are inherently dense; we are continuing to improve how they are announced and summarized.
Tell us about a barrier
If any part of this site is difficult or impossible for you to use, please tell us — it is the fastest way for us to fix it. Include the page, the assistive technology or browser you use, and what happened. Reach us through the contact page.
We treat accessibility reports as priority fixes, not feature requests.
