ROOM SIZE

How are you measuring?

Measure each room or rectangular area separately. They are added together.

Measurement method

Use this option if you already know the floor area.

PURCHASE FORMAT

How is the flooring sold?

Check the product listing. Most plank and tile flooring is sold by the box.

Purchase format

Printed on the box or product page, for example “23.4 sq ft per carton”.

Carpet is cut from rolls, so the final amount also depends on roll width and seam placement.

Waste allowance

Covers cuts at walls, doorways, and pattern matching.

Waste allowance

Diagonal, herringbone, and large-format layouts usually need more than a straight lay. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendation when one is given.

Add underlayment

Leave blank if your flooring has underlayment attached.

HOW IT WORKS

Boxes you can account for.

TapeToCart separates the area you measured, the waste allowance you chose, and the whole boxes you have to buy, so you can see where every square foot comes from.

How the calculation works

Each rectangular room is length multiplied by width. Room areas are added together, and the waste allowance is applied to the total.

Area to cover = measured area × (1 + waste %)

Boxes = area to cover ÷ coverage per box, rounded up

Because boxes cannot be split, the coverage you buy is usually a little more than the area to cover. The difference is shown as extra coverage.

Before you order

Use the coverage printed on the exact product you are buying. Carton sizes differ between products, even within the same brand.

Buy all boxes from the same production lot when possible, because color and texture can vary between lots.

Check the manufacturer’s instructions for expansion gaps, acclimation time, underlayment, and subfloor requirements.

Sources and assumptions

Area uses U.S. customary units: 1 yd² = 9 ft².

Box coverage and roll coverage are taken from the product values you enter. We do not assume a standard carton size.

The waste allowance is a planning margin you choose, and it is shown in every result.
